Electric Cooktop Element Not Heating

You turn the knob. The little light comes on. But the pan just sits there cold. One burner is dead while the others still work fine. Or the whole cooktop went quiet at once. Either way, dinner is stalled and you're standing there tapping the knob hoping it wakes up. Here's how we trace it, and what you can safely check first.

What a dead element is actually telling you

An electric burner is a simple loop. Power comes in, a switch or control board decides how much, and the element turns that into heat. When one burner quits, the break is usually somewhere in that one loop. When every burner quits but the clock and lights still work, the problem is upstream, often one leg of the 240-volt supply. That difference matters a lot. One cold burner and a whole cold cooktop are two different repairs. Note which one you have before you call. Also note if the burner glows dim, cycles off early, or never warms at all. Those three behaviors point different directions.

Cause one: the plug-in coil or its receptacle

On older coil cooktops, each element unplugs from a block under the burner. Coils get pulled, wiggled, and spilled on. The terminals pit and burn. That charring adds resistance, the connection heats up, and eventually the coil stops making contact. This is the cheapest family of causes and the most common on coil ranges. You can often see it. Lift the coil, look for black scorch marks or a melted receptacle. Around here, boilover from hard-water pasta pots speeds this up. Salt and mineral crust bake onto the terminals. A pitted receptacle gets replaced along with the coil, not by itself.

Cause two: the infinite switch behind the knob

Each knob runs an infinite switch. It cycles power on and off to set the heat level. These wear out. Symptoms we see: the burner only works on high, only works when you jiggle the knob, or stays on full blast no matter the setting. That last one is the worrying version. A switch stuck closed means the burner won't shut off, and that's a fire concern. Turn off the breaker if that happens and call us. On glass smoothtops the element itself can also crack or open up internally, which looks identical from the front. Testing tells us which.

Safe checks you can do right now

Try the other burners first. Note which ones heat. On a coil top, let it cool completely, then lift and reseat the coil, checking for burnt terminals. Verify the cooktop is fully pushed onto its power connection if it was recently moved. Check your breaker panel. A double-pole breaker can trip on one side only and still look like it's on, so flip it fully off and back on. Stop there. Do not remove the glass top, unscrew the control panel, or pull wiring. Voltage behind that panel is live even with the knobs off. If you smell burning plastic, kill the breaker and call us.

What we do differently on a service call

We meter it. A multimeter tells us if the element has continuity, if the switch is passing voltage, and if both legs of the supply are present at the terminal block. That takes the guessing out. We also read the burn pattern on connections, because scorching tells a story about where heat built up. If the cooktop has a control board, we check it before condemning it, since a bad relay and a bad element feel the same from the kitchen. We work swing hours, so an evening call after work is fine. One burner works on high but not low. Is that the element?

Usually not. That pattern points at the infinite switch behind the knob. The switch cycles power for lower settings, and when its contacts wear, only the full-on position still makes contact reliably.

All four burners are dead but the display still lights up. Why?

The display runs on 120 volts, the burners need 240. Losing one leg of the supply kills the heat and leaves the lights on. That points at the breaker or the house connection, not the cooktop.

Can I keep using the other burners while I wait?

If nothing smells hot and no burner stays on by itself, yes. Stop immediately if a burner won't shut off with the knob, or you see scorching or smell melting plastic. Shut off the breaker instead.
