What "runs but no heat" actually tells us
A dryer has two separate jobs: turn the drum and make heat. When the drum turns fine, the motor and belt are doing their part. That narrows the problem to the heating side, or to the airflow that heat depends on. Electric dryers make heat with a heating element. Gas dryers make it with a burner and igniter. Both use safety parts that shut heat off when air can't move. So a clogged vent looks exactly like a broken heater from the laundry room. We check airflow before we blame any part.
Cause one: airflow that's choked off
Start here, because it's free to look at and it's the reason we find most often. Lint packs the vent hose, the wall duct, or the outside flap. Air stops moving, heat builds, and a thermal fuse or limit switch cuts the heat to protect the machine. The drum keeps turning, which is why nothing seems obviously broken. Dryers behind a wall or in a closet with a long duct run clog faster. If you've been drying loads twice for a few weeks, that's a warning sign you already noticed.
Cause two: a tripped safety or a burnt-out heater
When a dryer overheats even once, a thermal fuse can open for good. That fuse is a one-time part. Replace it without fixing the vent and it opens again. Heating elements also fail on their own after years of cycling, and hard water minerals in the room don't help the corrosion. On gas models the igniter or flame sensor is the usual suspect. On electric models, a half-dead breaker or a burnt outlet can leave the drum spinning while the element gets no power at all.
Cause three: controls, timers, and the wrong setting
Check the obvious before anything else. Air Fluff or Air Dry runs the drum with no heat by design. Somebody bumped the dial. It happens more than you'd guess, especially with kids or a shared laundry room. Beyond settings, a cycling thermostat, a control board, or a worn timer can call for tumble and never call for heat. Moisture sensors inside the drum can also read wet clothes as dry and end the cycle early, which feels like no heat even when the heater works fine.

You can do this much: confirm the cycle isn't set to air-only, clean the lint screen, pull the dryer out and check the vent hose for kinks or packed lint, and go outside to see if the flap opens when the dryer runs. Reset the breaker once. That's the safe list. Don't open panels, touch gas connections, or test electrical parts. That pattern usually points to airflow. Heat builds until a thermostat or limit switch cuts it, then the drum keeps turning. Clean the vent line first, then have the safeties and thermostat tested.
Can I keep using the dryer with no heat?
We'd rather you didn't. If a safety keeps tripping, the cabinet is running hotter than it should and lint is involved. Unplug it or shut the gas valve and get it looked at.
