Built-In Microwave Repairs

Your built-in microwave quit. The plate spins but nothing heats. Or the door latch sticks, or the panel lights up and then goes dark. Now you're staring at a hole in the cabinets and wondering if you should fix it or rip it out. That trim kit and cutout make the choice trickier than a countertop unit. Here's how we think it through.

Why a built-in is a different decision than a countertop

A countertop microwave is easy math. You unplug it, carry it out, set a new one down. A built-in lives inside a cabinet opening cut to one size, often with a trim kit that matches nothing else on the shelf. Swap the unit and the new one may sit proud, leave a gap, or need cabinet work. Over-the-range models add a vent path and a mounting plate. So repairing a built-in often keeps you out of a remodel. That alone changes the balance, even when the fault sounds serious on the phone. Call us and describe what it's doing.

Age, and what age really tells us

Age matters, but not the way people expect. A unit under about eight years old usually has parts still moving through supply channels. Past twelve or so, control boards get scarce and door assemblies get discontinued. Here in the valley we also see two local wear patterns. Hard water leaves scale on the cavity and around the vent when the microwave sits above a range. Swamp cooler season swings humidity hard, and that condensation gets into membrane switches and touch panels. So a ten-year-old unit in a dry, clean kitchen can be a better repair candidate than a six-year-old one that steamed daily under a busy cooktop.

The fault type does most of the deciding

Some failures are routine. Door switches, latches, and hinges wear out and are common parts. Turntable motors, cooling fans, charcoal and grease filters, light sockets, and loose vent dampers are all straightforward. Touch panels and control boards depend entirely on whether the board is still made. The harder cases are the ones where the sealed high-voltage side has failed and taken other components with it, or where the cavity itself is rusted through or arced and pitted. A damaged cavity isn't something we patch. That's a safety line, and we'll say so plainly.

What we actually do on the visit

We start with your story. When did it change, what does it sound like, does the display do anything odd. Then we test the unit safely, check the door system, confirm it's getting power, and look at the vent path and filters. If it heats, we verify how well. We look up the model and check what parts are still available before we suggest anything. Then we tell you two things: what's wrong, and whether the fix makes sense against your cabinet situation. If it doesn't, we say that. Evenings and swing-shift hours work fine for us — reach us.

When we tell you to replace it

Rust or arc damage inside the cavity ends the conversation. A discontinued control board with no aftermarket option ends it too. Multiple unrelated failures stacking up on an older unit is a bad bet, and we'll say so. If the microwave has been dropped, if the door won't close square, or if there's visible damage to the door seal area, replacement is the safe call. And sometimes you're already planning new cabinets or a range hood. In that case a repair is money spent on something you're removing in three months. We'd rather tell you that than book the job.

Built-In Microwave Repairs — quick answers

My microwave runs but food stays cold. Is that fixable?

Often yes. No heat usually points to one specific area rather than the whole unit. We test it, identify the failed part, and check availability for your model before recommending anything either way.

Can I keep using it if the door doesn't latch right?

No. Stop using it. The door system is what keeps energy inside the cavity. A sticking or misaligned latch needs looking at before the unit runs again. Unplug it or shut the breaker off.

Will a new microwave fit my existing cabinet opening?

Sometimes, sometimes not. Cutout sizes and trim kits vary by maker and model year. Measure your opening before shopping. If a repair keeps your current fit, that's worth weighing seriously.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us what it's doing

Ring us or fill in the form. Give us the noise, the smell, the error code, the brand. Small details help us load the right parts before we ever knock on your door.

  2. Step 2

    We come look

Our tech tests the machine instead of guessing. You hear what failed and why, in plain words. Then you decide whether repairing it makes sense or replacing it makes more sense.

  3. Step 3

    Repair and retest

Approved work gets done, often the same visit. We run a full cycle before packing up, wipe down the area, and show you what changed so nothing surprises you next week.
