What Happens When Nobody Touches It
That filter sits in the floor of the tub, right under the lower spray arm. It catches food bits so they don't get pumped back onto your dishes. When it clogs, water can't drain through it fast. So the pump works harder and the wash water stays dirty. Here in the valley, hard water makes it worse. Scale builds on the mesh and locks the food debris in place. Over months you get a crust that no rinse cycle will break loose. Then the smell starts. Then the dishes stop getting clean. Eventually the drain pump or the circulation pump takes the abuse and quits.
The Habit That Prevents All Of It
Pull the bottom rack out. Look at the floor of the tub. You'll see a round cap or cylinder, usually with an arrow showing which way to turn it. Twist it a quarter turn and lift it out. Under it there's a flat screen you can often lift out too. Rinse both under hot tap water. Use an old toothbrush and a little dish soap on the mesh. If you see white chalky buildup, soak the parts in plain white vinegar for twenty minutes, then brush again. Drop everything back in, twist to lock. Two minutes, no tools. Do it while coffee brews.
How Often, Honestly
Once a month is a good rhythm for most homes. If you run the dishwasher daily, or you don't scrape plates first, make it every two weeks. Big family, lots of rice and pasta and coffee grounds? Every week is not overkill. Also glance at the drain area for glass chips, fruit stickers, and pieces of eggshell. Those slip past the mesh and jam things. While you're down there, wipe the rubber gasket around the door with a damp rag. Gunk collects in that fold and adds to the smell. Set a reminder on your phone for the first of the month and let it nag you.
Signs You're Past Prevention
Standing water in the bottom after a finished cycle means the drain path is restricted, not just the filter. Dishes coming out with a chalky film that scratches off with your nail is scale, and a cleaning cycle alone won't fix it. Other flags: a grinding or humming sound during the wash, the cycle running much longer than it used to, the top rack staying bone dry, or a sour smell that comes back a day after you clean. Do all dishwashers have a filter I can remove?
Most made in the last fifteen years or so do. Older models often used a hard food grinder instead, with a fixed screen. Look under the bottom rack. If nothing twists out, check your owner's manual before forcing anything.
Can I run the filter through the dishwasher itself?
No. It needs to be scrubbed by hand. The wash cycle can't clean the very part that's catching debris. Warm tap water, dish soap, and an old toothbrush do the job in a couple minutes.
Will a dishwasher cleaning tablet fix a clogged filter?
Not really. Tablets help with light scale and film on the tub walls, but they won't lift a packed mat of food off the mesh. Clean the filter by hand first, then a tablet can help maintain things.
